Warning signs
Deer crossing
What it means
Deer regularly cross this road. Be alert for animals.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a black leaping deer. Similar signs use a moose, a bear or a turtle.
Where you will see it
Rural and northern highways through forest and farmland, and suburban roads that border ravines and conservation areas.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down and scan the ditches and tree lines, especially at dawn, dusk and night.
- 2.If one deer crosses, expect more: they travel in groups.
- 3.Brake firmly and stay in your lane; swerving into oncoming traffic or the ditch is more dangerous than the animal.
On the G1 test
The handbook says deer regularly cross this road; be alert for animals. An answer that treats the sign as a hunting or a park notice is the distractor.
