Temporary condition signs
Lane closed ahead
What it means
The lane shown is closed ahead because of road work. Move into the open lane as soon as it is safe.
Orange signs mark construction zones and other temporary conditions.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
An orange diamond showing lanes, one of them bending to end in the next. The arrow shows which lane stays open.
Where you will see it
Work zones on freeways and multi-lane roads, posted well ahead of the barrels and cones.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Move into the open lane early, as soon as there is a safe gap.
- 2.Obey the posted speed and merge with the traffic in the open lane in turn.
- 3.Do not use the closing lane to pass the queue.
On the G1 test
Lane ahead is closed for roadwork: obey the speed limit and merge with traffic in the open lane. Compare it with the yellow right-lane-ends sign, which is permanent.
