Warning signs
Merging traffic
What it means
Two roads going in the same direction are about to join into one. Drivers on both roads are equally responsible for making sure traffic merges smoothly and safely.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a thick black arrow going straight up and a thinner line angling in to join it from the right. A mirrored version shows traffic joining from the left.
Where you will see it
The end of freeway on-ramps, where a collector joins the express lanes, and where two highways come together.
What to do when you see it
- 1.If you are on the through road, adjust your speed or change lanes if you can, to leave room for merging traffic.
- 2.If you are the one merging, match the speed of the traffic, signal, find a gap and slide into it without stopping.
- 3.Check your mirrors and blind spot; the responsibility is shared by both roads.
On the G1 test
The handbook makes a point of shared responsibility: drivers on both roads are equally responsible for a smooth, safe merge. An answer that puts the whole duty on one side is wrong.
