Lane control signal – red X

What it means

Do not drive in the lane under the red X. Move out of it as soon as it is safe.

Traffic lights, lane-control and pedestrian signals.

⚠ Not in the official handbook

This sign or signal is used on Ontario roads, but the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook does not describe it. We show it as general knowledge only, and no practice question tests it.

How to recognise it

A red X lit on a signal mounted over a single lane.

Where you will see it

Reversible lanes on bridges and highways, tunnels, and toll plazas.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.Do not drive in that lane; move out of it as soon as it is safe.
  2. 2.Look for the green arrow over another lane; that is the lane to use.

On the G1 test

Not in the official handbook, so not on the test. The logic matches the signs: red means the lane is closed to you, green means it is open.
