Traffic signals
Flashing green light / advance green
What it means
When you face a flashing green light, or a left-pointing green arrow together with a green light, you may turn left, go straight ahead or turn right from the proper lane, because oncoming traffic still faces a red light. Pedestrians must not cross on a flashing green light unless a pedestrian signal tells them to.

How to recognise it
The green lens flashing, or a green left-pointing arrow shown together with a green light.
Where you will see it
Intersections with heavy left-turn demand and no separate left-turn signal.
What to do when you see it
- 1.You may turn left, go straight or turn right from the proper lane; oncoming traffic still faces a red light.
- 2.Still yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk you turn across.
- 3.When it stops flashing and turns steady green, oncoming traffic gets green too: from then on, yield before turning left.
On the G1 test
The handbook calls it an advance green because oncoming traffic still faces a red light. Also tested: pedestrians must not cross on a flashing green unless a pedestrian signal tells them to.
