Warning signs
Steep hill
What it means
There is a steep hill ahead. You may need to use a lower gear.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a black truck tilted nose-down on a slope. The grade of the hill is often printed as a percentage beneath the truck.
Where you will see it
Escarpments, river valleys and northern highways where the road drops sharply, often with a truck runaway lane partway down.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Shift to a lower gear before the descent so the engine helps hold the speed down.
- 2.Brake in short, firm applications rather than riding the brakes all the way down, which overheats them.
- 3.Leave more room behind trucks, which descend slowly and may use a runaway lane.
On the G1 test
The handbook line is that you may need to use a lower gear. That is the answer the test wants, ahead of anything about brakes.
