Warning signs
Divided highway begins
What it means
A divided highway begins ahead: traffic in each direction is separated by a median. Keep to the right of the median.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a pair of black arrows that start together and split around a black island shape, one heading up on each side.
Where you will see it
Where a two-lane highway widens into a divided one, at the start of an expressway, and on approach to a bridge with separate spans.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Keep to the right-hand road as the median begins; the left one carries oncoming traffic.
- 2.From here each road is one-way, so a left turn means crossing the median at a proper opening, not turning across it anywhere.
On the G1 test
The handbook wording is the answer: traffic travels in both directions on separated roads ahead, keep to the right-hand road, each road carries one-way traffic.
