Red light

What it means

Stop completely before the stop line or crosswalk. Unless a sign prohibits it, you may turn right on red after a complete stop and when the way is clear. You may also turn left on red from a one-way street onto another one-way street.

Traffic lights, lane-control and pedestrian signals.

How to recognise it

The top lens of the signal head lit solid red.

Where you will see it

Every signalized intersection, and some mid-block crossings and fire-hall exits.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.Stop completely at the stop line; with no line, at the crosswalk; with no crosswalk, at the edge of the sidewalk; with no sidewalk, at the edge of the intersection.
  2. 2.Wait for the green and for the intersection to clear before moving.
  3. 3.Unless a sign says not to, you may turn right on red after a complete stop when the way is clear. You may turn left on red only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, again after stopping.

On the G1 test

The stopping order and the turn-on-red rules are what get asked. Right on red is allowed by default after a full stop; left on red only between one-way streets.
