Regulatory signs
No right turn on red
What it means
You may not turn right on a red light at this intersection. Wait for the green light.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A white sign with a right-turn arrow inside a red circle and slash, mounted above a traffic-light symbol whose red light is lit.
Where you will see it
Intersections with poor sightlines, heavy pedestrian traffic, a bicycle lane crossing the turn, or a transit priority signal.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Wait for a green light before turning right at this intersection.
- 2.On green, turn right after yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
- 3.Elsewhere, without this sign, you may turn right on a red light only after a complete stop and when the way is clear.
On the G1 test
Keep two rules apart: in Ontario a right turn on red is allowed by default after a full stop; this sign takes that permission away. It does not ban the right turn on green.
