Emergency detour route

What it means

Follow EDR markers to get around a freeway that has been closed by an emergency, until you can rejoin the freeway.

Green, blue and brown signs give directions, distances and services.

Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗

How to recognise it

A square marker with the letters EDR in a black circle above a small crown highway shield, posted along an alternate route.

Where you will see it

Along secondary roads that parallel provincial freeways, in place all the time and used whenever the freeway is closed.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.When the OPP has closed the highway, follow the EDR markers around the closure.
  2. 2.Stay on the marked route until it brings you back onto the highway.

On the G1 test

EDR signs are used during the unscheduled closure of a provincial highway when the OPP detour all traffic off it; the markers lead around the closure and back onto the highway.
