Regulatory signs

Stop

What it means

Come to a complete stop at the stop line, crosswalk or before entering the intersection. Yield to pedestrians and traffic, and proceed only when it is safe.

White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗

How to recognise it

The only eight-sided sign on the road: a red octagon with STOP in white letters. The shape alone identifies it, even from behind or under snow.

Where you will see it

Intersections without traffic lights: side streets meeting main roads, all-way stops in residential areas, and the exits of parking lots.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.Come to a complete stop: wheels not turning, not a slow roll.
  2. 2.Stop at the stop line. With no line, stop at the crosswalk; with no crosswalk, at the edge of the sidewalk; with no sidewalk, at the edge of the intersection.
  3. 3.Look left, right and left again. Yield to pedestrians and to traffic already in or close to the intersection, and go only when the way is clear.
  4. 4.At an all-way stop, the first vehicle to stop goes first. If two stop at the same time, the one on the right goes first.

On the G1 test

Questions turn on two points: a stop means a complete stop, not a slow roll, and where you stop when there is no painted line. Learn the order: stop line, crosswalk, edge of the sidewalk, edge of the intersection.
