Warning signs

Sharp curve (chevron)

What it means

Chevron signs mark a sharp bend or turn. The road turns in the direction the chevron points; slow down.

Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗

How to recognise it

A tall yellow rectangle with a large black arrowhead pointing sideways. Several are posted one after another along the outside of the curve, each pointing the way the road turns.

Where you will see it

The outside of sharp curves on highways and ramps, especially where the road disappears behind a hill or trees.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.Slow down well before the first chevron: the curve is sharper than it looks.
  2. 2.Steer the way the arrowheads point and let them guide you through when the road ahead is hidden, at night or in fog.
  3. 3.Do not brake hard or change lanes in the middle of the curve.

On the G1 test

The handbook says chevrons are posted in groups to guide drivers around sharp curves. An answer that describes a single sign warning of a slight bend is the wrong one.
