Regulatory signs
Community safety zone
What it means
You are entering a community safety zone. Fines for traffic offences such as speeding are increased in this area.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A white rectangle with the words COMMUNITY SAFETY ZONE in black, often with FINES INCREASED beneath, and BEGINS or ENDS panels at the limits of the zone.
Where you will see it
Around schools, playgrounds, seniors' residences, community centres and busy pedestrian streets, at the request of the municipality.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down and pay extra attention: the community has identified a special risk to pedestrians here.
- 2.Obey every posted limit and traffic control exactly; offences committed in the zone carry increased fines.
- 3.Expect children, seniors and people crossing mid-block.
On the G1 test
The fact tested is the consequence: traffic offences inside the zone are subject to increased fines. The sign does not itself change the speed limit.
