Pedestrian crossover

What it means

Be prepared to stop and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at the crossover. You may go only once pedestrians and crossing guards have completely cleared the roadway, and you must not pass any vehicle within 30 metres of the crossover.

White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

How to recognise it

A white sign with the word PEDESTRIAN above a large black X, posted at the crossing itself. Overhead yellow lights that pedestrians can switch on, and crosswalk markings on the road, often go with it.

Where you will see it

Roads without traffic lights where pedestrians need a protected place to cross: near transit stops, parks and plazas, and mid-block on long streets.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.Be prepared to stop, and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in the crossover.
  2. 2.Wait until pedestrians and any school crossing guard have finished crossing and are safely on the sidewalk before you proceed.
  3. 3.Do not pass any vehicle within 30 metres of a pedestrian crossover.

On the G1 test

The distance is what gets tested: no passing within 30 metres of a crossover. And the rule is to wait until the pedestrian is fully across on the sidewalk, not merely out of your lane.
