Temporary condition signs
Road work ahead
What it means
Road work is under way on the road ahead. Orange signs like this one warn of temporary conditions such as work zones, detours and lane closures.
Orange signs mark construction zones and other temporary conditions.

How to recognise it
An orange diamond with a black figure of a worker digging with a shovel. Orange is the colour of every temporary-condition sign.
Where you will see it
The approach to any road work, from resurfacing and bridge repair to utility digs, on freeways and city streets alike.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down and obey the posted construction-zone limit; fines for speeding double when workers are present.
- 2.Watch for workers, equipment and lane shifts; follow the orange signs and cones rather than the usual markings.
- 3.Leave extra room ahead: traffic in a work zone stops suddenly.
On the G1 test
Orange means temporary. The handbook lists road work ahead, and separately that fines double for speeding in a construction zone when workers are present. Expect a question on either.
