Warning signs
Stop sign ahead
What it means
A stop sign is ahead. Slow down and be ready to stop.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a small red octagon and a black arrow pointing up toward it.
Where you will see it
Rural roads where a stop sign sits just past a hill crest or a curve, and high-speed roads where drivers need extra distance to stop.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down now: a stop sign is coming that you cannot yet see.
- 2.Be ready to come to a complete stop at the sign itself, at the line, crosswalk or intersection edge.
On the G1 test
The handbook entry is stop sign ahead, slow down. The sign does not itself require a stop; the red octagon it announces does.
