Two-way left turn lane

Regulatory signs

Two-way left turn lane

What it means

The centre lane is reserved for left turns by vehicles travelling in either direction. Do not use it for through travel or passing.

White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗

How to recognise it

A black square showing two white arrows, one from each direction, each bending left. Posted above the centre lane or at the roadside.

Where you will see it

Busy suburban roads lined with driveways and plazas, where a shared centre lane keeps turning cars out of the through lanes.

What to do when you see it

  1. 1.Use the centre lane only to turn left, from either direction.
  2. 2.Enter it just before your turn, not far in advance, and never use it to pass or to travel along.
  3. 3.Watch for a vehicle from the opposite direction entering the same lane to turn left.

On the G1 test

The lane is for left turns only, from both directions. An answer that offers passing or driving straight in this lane is the wrong one.
