Warning signs
Watch for pedestrians
What it means
Watch for pedestrians and be prepared to share the road with them.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.
Summarised from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Read the original: MTO Driver’s Handbook – Signs ↗
How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a black walking figure and a short line under its feet.
Where you will see it
Ahead of mid-block crossings, near parks, seniors’ residences and transit stops, and on rural roads past a trail crossing.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down and scan both sides of the road, including between parked cars.
- 2.Be prepared to stop for anyone crossing or waiting to cross.
- 3.Do not pass a vehicle that has stopped ahead of you: it may be waiting for a pedestrian you cannot see.
On the G1 test
Yellow diamond means warning: people may be crossing ahead. The white PEDESTRIAN X sign marks a crossover where you must yield; the yellow-green figure is a school crossing.
Do not confuse it with
Pedestrian crossoverThe crossover sign is white with an X and stands at the crossing itself, where yielding is the law.
School crossingSchool crossing is fluorescent yellow-green with children, and a crossing guard may be directing traffic.
No pedestriansNo pedestrians crosses the figure out in a red circle: people are banned from that road, not expected on it.
